The latest edition of The Illustrated Book of Development Definitions breaks new ground. It addresses traditional and new planning problems: natural and industrial disasters such as hurricanes and oil spills; new housing types and living accommodations; changes in urban design and practice like new urbanism; sustainability; pedestrian and bicycle friendly environments; and more. Joining Harvey S. Moskowitz and Carl G. Lindbloom, authors of the first three editions, are two prominent, nationally known planners: David Listokin and Richard Preiss. Attorney Dwight H. Merriam adds legal annotations to almost all 2,276 definitions. These citations from court decisions bridge the gap between land use theory and real world application, bringing a new dimension to this edition. More than 20,000 copies of previous editions were sold over four decades to professionals and government representatives, such as members of planning and zoning boards and municipal governing bodies. This first revision in ten years updates what is widely acknowledged as an essential, standard reference for planners.

Review :
On the second edition: -A useful guide to understanding the development lingo.-
--Rural Development Perspectives
On the third edition: -This specialized glossary, a working tool for urban planners and city management officials who compose local ordinances, is also very useful for students enrolled in urban or regional programs. Heavily revised and expanded from earlier editions, this edition is a key reference source, made valuable by several unique attributes not commonly associated with dictionaries: it is illustrated (increasingly, city ordinances are containing illustrations); it includes commentaries and annotations to indicate how a term or phrase is to be used; it sufficiently generalizes the differing codes of various municipalities and states to level such barriers and still be accurate and useful in most US jurisdictions; and it reflects current interpretation and practice in land use (which has undergone remarkable change), noting significant growth in the suburbs and developments in industrial and retail sectors. Containing 1,955 definitions alphabetically arranged, 787 commentaries, and 102 illustrations, it is the only source of its kind. The vocabulary is rich, legal interpretations are treated with care, cross-references are numerous, and the bibliography is current. . . . Highly recommended.-
--J. Gelfand, Choice
On the third edition: -[An] impressive A-Z reference book.-
--Yves Laberge, Urban Geography
-An invaluable reference for anyone involved in land development planning and regulation.-
--Richard Roland, The Western Planner
-The most complete reference on the subject. Frequently used by PAS researchers.-
--Stuart Meck, AICP and Shannon Paul, PASMemo, APA
