Jorge Eduardo Arellano, Director de la Academia Nicaraguense de la Lengua: Mendieta Alfaro recurre a un narrador omnisciente para trazar una imagen totalizadora del protagonista, cuyo apellido nunca cita en la novela, pero queda mas que perfilada. Totalizadora no solo de Sandino y sus circunstancias, sino de una epoca y de sus antagonistas: los estadounidenses interventores y sus aliados, "hijos" de nicaraguenses, sobre todo los miembros de la emergente y luego decisoria de la realidad politica: la Guardia Nacional. En este sentido, la historia se ha ficcionalizado al maximo; pero sin distorsion alguna. Los hechos se respetan, lo que supone un proceso de admirable documentacion en Mendieta Alfaro, quien ha dejado una excelente novela, para mi casi insuperable. Hubo una vez un General tiene la importancia de reinventar a Sandino. El punto de vista del novelista es radicalmente distinto del tradicional, desde ahi adversarios o panegiristas han hecho sus propios juicios del General. El escritor y linguista Francisco Arellano Oviedo, editor de Hubo una vez un General, expresa: Por esta novela desfilan los politicos: Somoza, Sacasa, Moncada, Solorzano, Salvatierra; los interventores: Hatfield, Stimson, Coolidge, Hoover; las mujeres que amo el General: Margarita Calderon, Teresa Villatoro, Blanca Arauz; los defensores de la soberania nacional: generales Pablo Umanzor y Francisco Estrada que acompanaron a Sandino hasta la muerte; los guardias de Somoza, captores del General y ejecutores del magnicidio: los capitanes Lizandro Delgadillo y Policarpo Gutierrez. Los personajes bien caracterizados y descritos. Aparecen en un lenguaje plastico sus gestos, muletillas verbales, descripcion de sus cuerpos, tipo de cultura, ideales, y en algunas expresiones de ansiedad e ignorancia. Hubo una vez un General ocupa lugar importante en la novelistica nicaraguense. Enrique Alvarado, psicologo, escritor y profesor universitario: El general de Roger Mendieta Alfaro es la mas humana representacion de lo que fue Sandino. Podriamos decir que es la caracterizacion que infunde mayor respeto por el General de Hombres Libres. Este General sobre el cual descansa la narrativa de Roger Mendieta Alfaro es el mas autentico, el mas desconocido. Erick Aguirre, periodista, critico y narrador: Se trata de una novela que intenta Dibujar un retrato introspectivo de Augusto C. Sandino, y a traves de continuas incursiones al enjambre siempre vivo de su pensamiento, mostrarnos un panorama en claroscuro de su compleja personalidad y de la profunda significacion que para el desarrollo de su proyeccion como figura historica tuvieron, tanto su extraccion social, como las particulares circunstancias de su formacion. Fabio Gadea Mantilla, liberal y diputado al Parlamento Centroamericano y director de medios radiales: El tema de Sandino es tratado por Mendieta Alfaro con apego a la verdad historica y sobre todo con especial amenidad y buen manejo de la prosa; aquel estilo literario que nos hace ir disfrutando pagina por pagina.
