About the Book

My book, Thoughts from the Heart & Soul is about life, love and survival disguised as poetry. It is my view of the world both real and imagined. I cover everyday events presented in the news but I add my unique twist. I began writing after being in a coma from complications after brain surgery. I had an epiphany as my reason for being was clear to me. The writing thing came to me immediately after I was taken off the anti-seizure medication Dilantin. Now I write something almost everyday. My book is actually a big thank you to all the people that helped me as I went through rehabilitation. It is a tribute to the people that inspired me on the journey of finding myself after the brain injury. My writing chronicles my personal experiences in life beginning with my childhood growing up in Camden New Jersey to my college days in Detroit Michigan, original home of Motown to the present day of my living and writing in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As an author, I find myself drawing upon past situations I was involved in, exposed to, or affected by. Since the experiences in Camden, Detroit and Philadelphia (CAM-MO-PHIL) had a profound impact on my life, I wrote a poem about each. Camden Pride is my own one minute commercial about a city known mostly for its high rates of poverty and crime. However Camden has many treasures and produces talented, civic minded folks. The music and writing of the legendary William Smokey Robinson has been a great source of inspiration for me. The poem entitled, The Greatest Singer/Song Writer/Poet is my tribute to him. Finally, Beggadelphia is the observation of an experienced and wisetraveler view of the city that he and I call home. The book is organized into four sections of poetry that includes humor, inspiration, love (my favorite) and poems that make you think. The first poem entitled, A Jury, gives a humorous but true account of being led around like cattle all day to serve your civic duty. The last poem called Rehabbing thru life found on the back of the book shares insight that rehab is not just needed by those with physical ailments but by most. Simply put, at one time or another each one of us has experienced some degree of brokenness. The difference rests with what was broken and the course of rehab. In the other sections, I speak of love as illustrated with such poems as Aruba and It. This project is not about me but about helping others. I hope that this book inspires each reader to keep trying and never give up. You will be amazed at what you will accomplish!
