John Townsend has been in teaching for 25 years, and has been a full-time writer since January 2003. He has written more than sixty books for young people, on such wide-ranging subjects as monsters, urban legends, spiders, computer crime, and spies. Review :
Number nine is, "Your mouth contains more bacteria than the entire world's population," followed by a fact box from the Dental Institute in England. Includes sections on "Body Invaders," "Growing Up," and "How Embarrassing" among others. Sure to be a hit with those who like the weird, slightly gross, and goofy! Glossary, additional reading, websites, research topics, and index are included. Teacher Librarian April 2012-- "Teacher Librarian" These volumes present one hundred and one numbered facts that are loosely grouped by topic (human body systems, "embarrassing" functions in Body; eating and exercise in Shape). On busy pages, informational paragraphs, quizzes, anecdotes about famous people, case studies, photographs, etc., all vie for attention. Body ends with "Top Ten Tips". Reading list, websites. Glos., ind. - GBH (Gail Hedges) The Horn Book Spring 2012-- "The Horn Book" This colorful and timely series will attract readers and hold their interest. Each page has a vivid barcode pattern across the tops and bottoms of pages. Photographs, Q & A's in green boxes, and thumbtack "what's that?" yellow boxes include definitions of terms. There are also true stories with real people and quizzes. "Oops!" and "Listen Up!" sections draw attention to problems and ideas. Although short in length, each book covers 101 tips amply and logically. The books are attractive, visually exciting, and easy to understand. The feature enhancements make them very appealing to the current generation. Students will love this series! Bibliography. Glossary. Websites. Rita Fontinha, YA/Reference Librarian, Milton (Massachusetts) Public Library Recommended Library Media Connection May/June 2012 Issue-- "Library Media Connection" Young fact lovers will be delighted with this collection of 101 facts about the human body. The first fact in the opening chapter on "Your Body Up Close" reveals your body is composed of numerous metals, water and "enough fat to make about seven bars of soap." Readers find out about sweat, acne myths, and unwanted hair in "How Embarrassing," and "What's Going on Down There?" offers explanations of various concerns about puberty including "twisted testicle" and female weight gain around hips and stomach. The final fact in the last chapter, "Beyond Belief," reports that a study of a rowing team found those who exercised together were able to handle twice the discomfort and pain as those who trained alone. Endorphins are the reason. The book concludes with a bibliography, webliography, a list of topic to research, and an index. Fact boxes, quizzes, and loads of illustrations add to the interest.-- "School Librarian's Workshop, "Noteworth Nonfiction: Body Language" These two books offer light, friendly, and accessible approaches to health topics that tweens and teens care about. . . .Most similar series are dry, but these titles are colorful, conversational, and extremely teen centered. Quizzes and "Top Ten Tips" lists make them particularly helpful, though the format is more suitable for browsing than for research. Solid offerings.-- "School Library Journal" 101 Things is a series that explores different topics of interest to teens. In this edition the author is exploring things about the human body that are not general knowledge. The facts that are discussed are numbered and there are diagrams and pictures on each page to help with the understanding of the information that is given. Some of the topics covered include why we have body odor, what gas is, and if we are shorter in the morning when we wake up. This is a fun way to learn about the human body and is a quick read. This would also be a good book for beginning research. -Kelly Arbuckle, McMillan School Omaha Public Schools 3/12/2013-- "Omaha Public Schools"
