About the Book

How does friction help you ride a bicycle? How does a submarine keep from sinking? What is equilibrium? The visually stimulating 'Sci-Hi' books take learning science core curriculum to a whole new exciting level. Each title explores an area of life, physical, or earth science in a way that is both engaging and comprehensive.

Review :
How is a tug-of-war game related to surfing or a tennis match? When is friction a friend? These and many other questions are answered in the book, Forces and Motion. It covers basic physics concepts and uses real-world examples that are illustrated with clear and catchy photographs. This book will be especially engaging for students who are involved in or enjoy sports. The majority of the concepts are described using images of athletic pursuits. For instance, force is explained with Frisbee throwing; friction is related to swimming, sledding, and cycling; gravity is illustrated with skydiving; rugby is featured in the discussion of mass versus weight; and auto racing illustrates speed and velocity. Familiar adventuresome but non-athletic examples are also used. Large trucks and toy trucks are contrasted in terms of momentum; submarines are used to illustrate buoyancy; and the structure and action of all six simple machines are taught in the context of firefighting. A large section at the end of the book discusses in some detail the three laws of force and motion described by Isaac Newton. Instead of using abstract or unfamiliar examples and situations, the author explains the concepts using a bowling game, the world's most massive airplane, and sumo wrestlers. Then all three laws are discussed in relation to the Ironman Triathlon. A lot of fundamental information can be found in the eight books of the books in the Sci-Hi series. Each would be very useful as a springboard for further research on numerous topics. The series is targeted to students in grades 6-9. Each colorful, 48-page book is enlightening, visually attractive, and easy to read. The authors approach each subject by putting core information into a magazine format with large titles, a variety of fonts, clear introductions, catchy graphics, informative sidebars, and specific examples of the content being discussed. Despite their length, there is a lot packed into these high-interest volumes. At the end of each volume is a glossary, lists of books and websites for further information, and a comprehensive index. Other features in the various books are timelines, content reviews, and quizzes. Having this series of books available can provide a good foundation and support the learning of key concepts of the National Science Education Standards for physical science. The books would be an engaging and useful resource for a middle school science classroom or school library. Recommended--Richard Lord NSTA3/17/2009-- "NSTA" This series is divided into two sets, Life Science and Physical Science. Each book is designed with colorful pages and large graphics and photographs in an easy-to-read format. Each chapter contains concise introductions emphasizing the specific content, and key questions and answers to help students understand the science. Vocabulary words and important information and definitions are underlined and in bold to engage the young reader. There are relevant experiments, activities, quizzes, information on safety, applications to the real world, and historical perspectives. The books contain high interest content, have easy readability, and would be useful in a middle school library. Bibliography. Glossary. Timeline. Websites. Index. Recommended.
