About the Book

This United States Army publication was originally published in 1966. The original preface describes it thus: "A scientific revolution has taken place throughout the world during the past decade. The results have generated new materials, new components, and improved design techniques that allow the construction of ultra-complex products, both military and consumer-type that twenty years ago were beyond the comprehension of man. "A price has been paid for these advances. The cost of ownership or cost of maintenance of these products has increased considerably. The technician has been outmoded in that he can no longer properly maintain such ultra-modern equipment. The cost of spare parts has increased since we diagnose by guess and repair by replacing components until the faulty one is isolated. Too often the good parts that are removed in the elimination process are discarded. "These and similar failings demanded that a new discipline of science be created. This is called Maintainability. The tenets of the science provide knowledge that will allow military materiels to be designed so that they can be more easily maintained. The application of these principles will decrease the cost of ownership. "Maintainability has been an embryonic science for the past few years. Knowledge has been generated. This book Maintainability Engineering, is one of the first attempts to collect and present that knowledge to the scientific community in a concise and orderly manner. "This book has been written by a team of experts from the industrial, academic, and military communities. It is presented in such a manner that it can be used either as a reference book or a self-study text for practicing engineers. It is the hope of the authors that this book may be of assistance to universities as a basic text for teaching the principles of maintainability to the undergraduate engineering student.
