Review :
A brilliantly paced, action-packed story with some breathtaking moments A real page turner … This is a brilliantly paced action packed story with some breathtaking moments. It is even more poignant knowing it is inspired by true stories. An excellent read, full length novel for mature, capable readers. Based in part of the memories of the author's father, also an American pilot who was shot down during the last war, this story eschews sentimentally patriotic pictures of Vichy France in favour of the more equivocal reality. Here's an adventure in the classic mould with a brief scene-setting to start, a tumultuous opening action sequence and the story of a flyer downed in occupied France and trying to reach a neutral country. But all is not straightforward: the central character, 19-year-old Henry Forester is co-pilot of a B24. He is an American for whom duty means bombing raids on German targets which can mean a close proximity to towns or a lack of distinction between military or any enemy establishment. When he is catapulted from the routines of a bomber aircraft into a very individual struggle he comes into contact with first-hand knowledge of the effects of the war on ordinary people, of every day being one of constant danger. He is helped on his way by a variety of characters of all ages and he encounters bitterness, mistrust, betrayal, inhumanity, violent cruelty, and immense courage and kindness as he journeys towards freedom. At the same time, various experiences lead him to begin to come to terms with his own internal conflicts, his resentment at the unyielding forcefulness of his father towards him during his boyhood. An author's note, a map and glossary add to the authenticity and web links at wwww.usborne-quicklinks.com give more background information. The final resolution mixes hope with regrets in this assured debut novel. I enjoyed reading this story and learning about the true experiences of a soldier during the World War II, realising that maybe hope can get you through tough times.
