About the Book

This volume presents complementary analyses of the current features, issues and trends of multilateral security and the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) peace operations. The work presents an astute interpretation of the attributes of ESDP operations in the context of the diffusion of peace operations practice at the present time. Founded on the detailed examination of different peace operations and the analysis of relevant data, the book allows for the assessment of the near future of peace operations.

Review :
'This volume is an excellent contribution to the literature, both on peace operations in general and on the role of the European Union and its foreign, security and defence policies. By providing a rich historical and conceptual context and then linking this with detailed empirical studies of peace operations, it supplies a rich vein of ideas and information for a range of audiences.' Michael Smith, Loughborough University, UK '... provides a timely, rigorous, and compelling analysis of the EU s increasing involvement in peacemaking and peacekeeping operations in a complex and ever-changing global context. It is invaluable for students, scholars, and practitioners of European Security and Defense Policy and of peace operations.' Desmond Dinan, George Mason University, USA 'A stimulating book and a useful tool for students and scholars dealing with security and defence, it challenges the general trend of considering the West's operations as a whole. Thus, it highlights the peculiarities of ESDP operations through a detailed empirical analysis of several case studies, ranging from the recent experiences in East Timor and the Gaza Strip to the EU Althea mission in Bosnia and the AMIS mission, led by the African Union, in Darfur.' International Spectator 'Multilateral Security and ESDP Operations provides an overview of the practice of peacekeeping operations which draws-in recent theoretical and empirical scholarship; heavily supported by statistics and graphic data. This work contributes to the growing discourses surrounding the EU and it take on international problems while captivating the readers with up-to-date empirical information and adequate case-work. This book is recommended to students and scholars of international relations, European studies and all the sub-fields located in between.' The Central European Journal of International & Security Studies 'The volume edited by Fulvio Attina and Daniela Irrera disentangles the intricate and fluid nature of multilateral security and the role of the European Union (EU) in it. The volume not only testifies to an increasing effort in researching and theorising peacekeeping, but also represents a solid and necessary step towards rich and empirically sustained research on multilateral security.' Political Studies Review '... a valuable and timely contribution to the explanation and understanding of both the EU's roles in peace missions and the ESDP contribution to the emergence of novel multilateral security governance strategies... The book makes a discerning appraisal of the actors, issues, and processes that inform the EU's involvement in peacebuilding and crisis management operations as well as its security partnerships with other international actors... the volume edited by Attina and Irrera will benefit advanced undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, and practitioners both of EU's external relations and international peace mission. The framework and level of analysis exhibited by the contributors of the collection make the volume invaluable for the purposes of teaching and theorizing the shifting dynamics of the EU's common foreign and security policy.'
