About the Book

Through an anthropological study of a highly influential movement of French 'alterglobalization' activists, this book offers an ethnographic window onto the global movement against corporate capitalism and the neoliberal policies of the WTO. Based on extensive fieldwork on the Larzac plateau in rural southern France, it explores the politics of protest in which activists engage. It examines their resistance to various forms of power, their organization of struggle, their attempts to live out their ideals in daily life, and their challenges to conventional understandings of politics, democracy, economics, morality and globalization. By subjecting power and resistance to ethnographic study rather than adopting them as abstract categories of analysis, this volume makes an important contribution to theoretical debates on globalization, domination and resistance. It will be of interest not only to anthropologists and scholars of social movements, but also to sociologists and political scientists, as well as to activists themselves.

Table of Contents:
Contents: Introduction: the voice of the street; The Larzac and Millau; Organizing the movement; Being and becoming an activist; Power and domination; Resistance; Moral foundations; Conclusion; Bibliography; Index.

About the Author :
Gwyn Williams

Review :
'A wonderful book at many levels; an ethnography of one of the historic centres of protest, the Larzac in southern France, it documents the social and moral life of activists engaged in transforming themselves and transforming the world, with some tension between these ambitions. By exploring activists' understandings of power, resistance and rights, it then establishes the ground for a reflexive critique of these concepts in social theory.' Jeff Pratt, University of Sussex, UK 'Williams demonstrates the best features of contemporary ethnography, combining a vivid account of an alterglobalization movement in France with the wider argument that autonomy, power and resistance must be understood as products of particular, historically situated ways of understanding and acting on the world. This is a book for social scientists, political activists and anybody who tries to bring the two together.' Simon Coleman, University of Sussex, UK 'His work Struggles for an Alternative Globalization opens new perspectives by putting focus on 'autonomy' as a starting-point for theoretical observation of alterglobalization practices and of the potential they might have in bringing about a new and different global society.' Social Anthropology 'Since the 1970s a rocky, windswept plateau in France's southern massif central has gained "almost mythical status" among activists on Europe's autonomous left as a land where people share a political conscience and a desire to resist the power of the state. Gwyn Williams's new book opens up this mythical world on the Larzac Plateau to examine what politics actually means in the everyday life of its inhabitants.'
