About the Book

The screenplay for the critically-acclaimed film of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel provides a gripping and unforgettable text for use in English at Key Stage 4 and 5. The novel was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 2006, while the film starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron garnered praise for it's faithful rendering of the novel's dystopian vision. This edition of Joe Penhall's screenplay features an extensive section of classroom activities created by leading national experts in using Drama within English, Paul Bunyan and Ruth Moore. The scheme of work reflects all the latest requirements of the new English GCSEs and is designed to raise standards in English and enable pupils to develop analytical thinking, independent learning and transferable skills. The Road is set a few years after an unexplained cataclysmic world disaster has left the earth poisoned, barren and hostile. While ash blocks out the sun, men either starve or join the marauding gangs of cannibals. An atmosphere of menace and suspense is skilfully wrought throughout the narrative. Readers are advised that there are some scenes of a disturbing nature.
