About the Book

A novel that will capture your heart and then shatter it into a thousand pieces. “Code Name Verity wrecked me.” LEIGH BARDUGO “Genuinely stunning.” MAUREEN JOHNSON '‘It has been a while since I was so captivated’', THE GUARDIAN ‘‘Remarkable’', DAILY MAIL “Will soar into your heart”, LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON “Had me gasping out loud” GAYLE FORMAN I have two weeks. You’ll shoot me at the end no matter what I do. October 11th, 1943 A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. Its pilot and passenger are best friends. One of the girls has a chance at survival. The other has lost the game before it's barely begun. But their love will have the power to change everything. When "Verity" is arrested by the Gestapo, she's sure she doesn't stand a chance. As a secret agent captured in enemy territory, she's living a spy's worst nightmare. Her Nazi interrogators give her a simple choice: reveal her mission or face a grisly execution. As she intricately weaves her confession, Verity uncovers her past, how she became friends with the pilot Maddie, and why she left her in the wrecked fuselage of their plane. On each new scrap of paper, Verity battles for her life, reflecting on courage, failure and her desperate hope to make it home. But will trading her secrets be enough to save her from the enemy? ‘I was so captivated’- Guardian ‘Heartbreaking’ – Kirkus starred review This heartbreaking World War II novel of adventure, love and female friendship from award-winning Elizabeth Wein is perfect for fans of Kristin Hannah’s The Women, Laura Nowlin’s If He Had Been With Me and Marcus Zusak’s The Book Thief

Review :
“Harrowing and wholly believable, Code Name Verity wrecked me. It is a book as unexpected, beautiful, and enduring as the friendship at its heart. The story’s brutality is almost intimate. Its depictions of heroism are so real and vibrant, they live beyond the page. You will want to clutch these characters to you in the hopes of keeping them safe, and your heart will break knowing that you can’t.” Leigh Bardugo, NYT bestselling author of Shadow and Bone “Genuinely stunning. It gets inside you and stays.” Maureen Johnson, NYT bestselling author “It’s a little like being in love, reading a gem of a book like this one. I fell for these idiosyncratic, brave, brave girls. Not many books surprise me, fewer yet make me cry, but this one had me gasping out loud and then doing that embarrassing spontaneous sob-eruption thing.” Gayle Forman, NYT bestselling author, via MTV’s Hollywood Crush “It’s devastating and true and wonderful.” Melissa de la Cruz, NYT bestselling author, via MTV’s Hollywood Crush '‘[It] does more than stick with me. It haunts me. I just can’t recommend it enough.’', Maggie Stiefvater, bestselling author of Shiver '‘It has been a while since I was so captivated by a character’', Guardian “This astonishing tale of friendship and truth will take wing and soar into your heart’” Laurie Halse Anderson, NYT bestselling author ‘A compelling, uncompromising read – exciting’', Independent '‘This is a remarkable book, which had me horrified and totally gripped at the same time’', Daily Mail '‘… a rare young adult novel entirely about female power and female friendship’', New York Times "A heartbreaking tale of friendship during WWII…A tour de force, unforgettable and wrenching,” Kirkus Starred Review ‘‘A rich and rewarding adventure story', The Scotsman '‘If you want an original read that will challenge your perceptions about truth, lies, bravery and deception, this is one for you’', Sugarscape '‘[a] tale of espionage, torture and female derring-do.’', The Times
