About the Book

Although the new small and medium enterprises (SME) sector is emerging as one of the driving forces in transition economies, little is known about the conditions behind its successful development or about policies which could facilitate its expansion. This book explores the complex relationship between the growth of the SME sector and the current policies and institutional, historical and cultural forces that shape its fate.

Review :
'This informative collection surveys the emergence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in transitional economies...the reader who delves further into the individual case studies will find a variety of experiences, which presents us with puzzles and invite further empirical testing...In sum, there is much to learn from these careful case studies.' - Judith Thornton, University of Washington, Europe-Asia Studies '...the editors Bruno Dallago and Robert McIntyre managed to mobilize several excellent specialists of the post socialist small business development with success. It became clear from the essays that the participants of this project had accumulated great knowledge of transitional economies and the development of the SME sector.' - Mihály Laki, Acta Oeconomica, Periodical of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
