About the Book

This book is in honour of the 75th birthday of Professor Eviatar Nevo, a leading world evolutionary biologist, and consists of contributions from friends and colleagues of Professor Nevo, who are all world-leading researchers conducting active research in diverse fields of evolution from cosmic to primarily biological evolution. The authors include evolutionary, molecular, and organismal biologists, systematists, paleontologists, ecologists, genetics, and also physicists and mathematicians who are all fascinated by the major thread that links all natural phenomena together (cosmically, biologically, and culturally), namely, the evolutionary process. This volume consists of four parts: (I.) Evolution of Life and Evolutionary Theory- including papers on the origin of life, stress and evolution, population genetic structure, convergent evolution in extremely halophilic prokaryotes, complex dynamics of multilocus genetic systems caused by cyclical selection, and evolutionary epistemology; (II.) Genome Evolution- including papers on adaptive genome regulation, comparative mammalian genomes and novel genes, selection as generator of genetic diversity, the biological role of pseudogenes, and genome signatures; (III.) Phylogeography and Phylogeny- including papers on phylogeographic hypotheses, mushroom phylogeny, macroevolution, and the origin of higher taxa; and (IV.) Human Evolution and Ecology- including papers on man's place in nature, telomere biology and aging, the origin of human hairlessness, and the effects of humans on Mediterranean landscapes. 'Skeletal metastases are both a common and devastating consequence of a spectrum of cancers. Significant advances have occurred in our understanding of the pathobiology of this process. This text provides a comprehensive review of current investigative findings and their clinical implications.' Steven T. Rosen, M.D. Series Editor
