Abstract: ABSTRACT Stated in the publication "Science Education - Key Learning Area Curriculum Guide" prepared by the Curriculum Development Council, Hong Kong, the aims of science education have been re-defined to align them with the global change in education aims for the 21st century - enabling our students to enjoy learning, enhancing their effectiveness in communication and developing their creativity and sense of commitment. Students should be enabled to learn how to learn better in science through an improved curriculum framework of learning, teaching and assessment strategies. Science education, besides contributing to the development of science capabilities in the students, should also take up the role for the development of generic skills, values and attitudes through a range of learning activities. This report clearly stated that one of the major focuses of the new science curriculum trend, led by the change in society needs, should be shifted to the development of generic skills instead of focusing solely on scientific knowledge and understanding. High order thinking skills like critical thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving skills are placed on the first priority during the period 2001 to 2006. If we are orientated in a correct direction, how can we catalyze the process of change? If new technologies are the origin of the change in the society needs, can technologies also provide the answer to satisfy the new needs? Are there any facilitating tools suitable for these changes? After the failure of the five year strategy in information technology (IT) in education, in which expository approach (N. Law, 2000) was adopted by most of the teachers in Yuen Long Public Secondary School (the school), I, as the IT coordinator of the school, still i ABSTRACT (continued) believe that IT can play an important role in students' learning if it is properly used. All of the above has inspired me to do this research with a more powerful IT tool, Knowledge Forum (KF), for the facilitation of social constructivist approach (N. Law, 2000) which leads to the development of high order thinking skills. With the proper use of IT tools and the embedded pedagogy, we hope we could fully explore the potentials of IT in the enhancement of the new science curriculum which emphasizes on the attainment of high order thinking skills. A case study was conducted in the school to compare the cognitive activities between students learning through KF and those through normal lectures. The ideas expressed during the learning activities were coded and analyzed, with Bloom's Taxonomy employed as the scale for measurement. Almost all students were satisfied and found that they have gained knowledge in the course subject. The usage of knowledge Forum, that emphasized knowledge building, was more successful in enhancing high order thinking activities. Findings indicated that students were enabled to develop new habits of learning, appreciate feedback of peers, take a more active role in learning, analyze and evaluate information and feel comfortable in a less structured learning environment. On the whole, it seems that Knowledge Forum is a powerful IT tool to facilitate high order thinking.
