Abstract: ABSTRACT Effectiveness of Web-based Instruction on Primary Chinese Language in HK By Lo Yuet Kin Sam Master of Science in Information Technology in Education The present study was conducted through a quasi-experimental procedure and investigates to what extent the effects of Web-based Instruction (WBI) on pupil academic performances, particularly with comparison to the traditional teacher-centered (lecturing) format instruction. The study will also examine whether there exist differences in pupil learning attitudes, interests in WBI, and self-efficacy as affected by WBI. A pilot study has been carried out in order to consolidate all the procedures and instruments used in the main study. 24 Primary five Chinese pupils participated in the main study at a Primary school located in Northern New Territories. The study was divided into two phases. In the first phase, the participants took a traditional lecture format course on Chinese language. Before the information of the lecture-format course was released, all subjects took a questionnaire concerning their attitudes, learning interests, and self-efficacy and Chinese idiom usage which was used as pretests. They then underwent the five-week traditional lecture format course. At the end of the five-week session, participants were asked to fill out the questionnaire and took the Chinese idiom usage test once again, which served as posttest-1. The second phase of study was then carried out two weeks after the end of the first phase of study. The same group of pupils was asked to take a five-week WBI course on the same level but in different content. At the end of this five-week session, participants were asked to fill out the same set of questionnaire which was used in the first phase and took the Chinese idiom usage test which serves as posttest-2. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Conclusion, implications, and recommendations for future research were discussed in this report.
