Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled "A Study of GIS Data Warehouses in Hong Kong" Submitted by YU Chi-Kit for the degree of Master of Geographic Information Systems at The University of Hong Kong in June 2004 The main objective in this dissertation is to evaluate the establishment of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data warehouses in Hong Kong. A secondary objective is for the author to establish a sample GIS data warehouse to show the possibility of implementation. A GIS data warehouse is a repository for the mass storage of GIS data. GIS data are spatial data with spatial topological structure and attributes. GIS data consist of different spatial information layers, which form a set of geographically indexed data with a common theme or type, such as a road network. To form a map, the GIS user selects a set of map layers and overlays them by using a vector or raster data structure. In Hong Kong, the Land Information Centre (LIC) data are stored in the form of a "common GIS" dataset provided by the Lands Department. It is digitized by contractors using the Computer Aided System and Digital Map System approaches, whereas spatial data were digitized and transformed into an ESRI Arc/Info software format. The data generated by contractors are Computer Aided Designed data, of the kind one finds in the format of AutoCAD and Microstation, which have limited spatial topology between spatial data. To put it simply, LIC data are used to show geographical features in the form of a digital map, but they are not used for doing GIS analysis. Thus, further development of the completed elements, such as the topological structure and attributes, needs to be carried out if they are to become a set of completed GIS data. Metadata are data about data. They provide essential background information about datasets, such as when and where they were compiled and who produced them. A layman would think that data generated from the LIC are GIS data as they look like spatial data, having the same topology and the appropriate attributes. Within Government and private companies, GIS professionals often find it difficult to determine what data exist. They want to have centralized data warehouses for ease of searching and for accuracy. The study covers Hong Kong only, due to lack of resources, including time and funding. In order to establish GIS data warehouses in Hong Kong, it is necessary to ascertain what GIS data are stored in different governmental and non-governmental organizations in the territory. The questionnaires are set with this in mind. As no similar research has hitherto been carried out in Hong Kong, the results we obtained from the questionnaires are the first of their kind in the territory. The results demonstrate that data warehouses are necessary in Hong Kong. The findings from the questionnaire obviously show that 73% of the GIS professionals would agree to the setting up of GIS data warehouses in Hong Kong. The sample GIS data warehouse built by the author also proves that the implementation is not difficult technically. This dissertation therefore provides the very first foundation for any future research into this topic which has the potential to be highly beneficial to the society.
