Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Speech Recognition Predictability of a Cantonese Speech Intelligibility Index submitted by Elizabeth W. W. CHUA for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2004 Two studies were conducted to produce a Cantonese Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) and to evaluate its accuracy in predicting speech recognition performance of people with normal and impaired hearing. The first study re-examined data from Ho (2002), and expanded it by interpolation. As a result, frequency-importance and transfer functions for the Cantonese Hearing In Noise Test (CHINT) are reported. In the second study, sentence recognition scores measured using CHINT in three noise levels (65, 69 and 73 dB SPL) and seven signal-to-noise ratios from -4 to 16 dB were obtained from twenty-seven adults with normal hearing and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing impairment. Participants were divided into three groups according to their pure tone average at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. Performance was compared between groups and between testing conditions. Individual observed scores were also compared to their predicted scores calculated from the SII. Results indicate the three groups have significantly different performance. The normal hearing group performs better than both hearing-impaired groups; the mild hearing- impaired group performs better than those with moderate impairment. However, within groups, there are no significant differences in performance when testing in the three noise levels. The CHINT SII is able to predict, within a 95% confidence interval, speech v i recognition scores for 73% of people with normal hearing, 52% of people with mild hearing impairment, and 40% of people with moderate hearing impairment. The predictability decreased as degree of hearing impairment increased. To improve the index predictive accuracy, further investigations are needed to find out what correction factors should be incorporated. The present SII serves as a baseline for such endeavour. vi i DOI: 10.5353/th_b3050973 Subjects: Speech perception - Testing Speech, Intelligibility of Cantonese dialects
