Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Development of a usability inventory for Chinese webpages Submitted by CHAN Pak Ho Plato For the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong In May 2002 This study investigates the dimensions of webpage usability and constructs a usability inventory for Chinese webpages, using the human information processing approach. The construction was divided into three phases. In the first phase, an initial inventory was constructed based on the Purdue Usability Testing Questionnaire (PUTQ) with new items constructed from the thinking-aloud procedure, semi-structured interviews with web users and a review of the human-computer interaction literature. Items rated as unimportant or irrelevant to web use were then discarded. In the second phase, 124 participants used the initial inventory to evaluate the webpage of a travel agency. Expert categorizations and factor analysis were carried out to explore the web usability dimensions. Three factors relevant to webpage usability were found: (1) information transmission and organization; (2) predictability and precision and (3) flexibility and adequacy of feedback. Finally the validity of the inventory was examined. The new inventory had good construct and content validity through the extensive user-based item selection process. Participants performed search tasks to locate target information on the webpages of two real estates companies in Hong Kong, one of them was clearly better designed as indicated by shorter search time and higher user satisfaction in a preliminary study. Results indicated that the new inventory was able to distinguish between webpages of different usability and was reliable in terms of internal consistency. Criterion-related validity, however, as indicated by the correlation between the inventory score and the socre on Systems Usability Scale, was substantially better in the webpage of better usability than that in the webpage of poorer usability. Such difference in criterion-related validity limits the use of the inventory in highlighting usability problems for webpage of poorer usability. Nonetheless, the new inventory is helpful in diagnosing usability of webpages from a user-centered perspective and acts as a quick and cost-efficient accompaniment to other usability evaluation methods.
