Abstract: 3 Abstract Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) provides a new form of learning environment in which students can interact both synchronously and asynchronously. This new medium of communication, supported by network technology, allows interaction that is time- and place- independent, text-based and many to many. The distinctive features of CMC enable students to participate more and in higher quality of interaction. Research evidence suggests that CMC can both encourage and discourage participation in group discussion and there are pedagogical values in using CMC in collaborative language learning. Students are given alternatives to express their ideas in electronic forum with less pressure than with face to face (f2f) interaction and they may reflect on their thoughts as they are engaged in the writing process and thus promote engagement and productive discussion (Hodgson et al., 2001). The purpose of this study was to investigate how CMC affected students' behaviour in their participation in group discussion. CMC tools mediated by WebCT was used to facilitate students' discussion for a group project in English. The study showed that students were willing to discuss online in English. Even for students who were shy and weak in the spoken language, they were able to discuss in groups. The results showed they were able to find satisfaction in posting online messages and it seemed that CMC was a good alternative being offered to language teachers so as to encourage students to communicate more in English. One of the major findings of this study was that the success of the use of CMC relied a lot on how CMC was 4 incorporated in students' learning environment and its implementation in the curriculum.
