Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Effect of Parents' Technology Perception on Children's Technology Acceptance submitted by Suk-Yee FUNG for the degree of Master of Science in Information Technology in Education at The University of Hong Kong in August 2003 This study was to investigate the effect of parents' perception on children's technology acceptance. By looking at how it made an effect on children's intention to use technology, it was hoped that we could suggest effective strategies for information technology promotion amongst children. Beginning from reviewing literatures on parents' view of technology and analysis using factor analysis, it was found that parents had different concerns on children's use of technology. From literatures, parents showed three major concerns including appropriateness of contents; knowledge acquisition and privacy, while in the factor analysis, another eight dimensions were concluded, in which, knowledge acquisition was the most recognized concerns reflected by parents. When investigating these dimensions of parents' technology perception, a gap between literature and this study was found. It was thus recommended to undertake further study to investigate different dimensions of parents' technology perception. Based on the factors of parents' technology perception that were extracted, their relationship on children's intention to use technology was studied. Since Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) stated that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use had an effect on one's technology acceptance, instead of using these factors, children's perceptions on technology usefulness and ease of use were also considered in the regression model. As stated in TAM, predictive power of children's own perception on usefulness and ease of use was very high. They were even higher than the variables on parents' technology perception. About 34.8% total variance was explained by these two variables, while parents' technology perception explained about 1.4% total variance. From our result, only two variables (parents perception on children's technology adoption and its improvement of living standard) on parents' technology perception were found significant. Besides looking at the effect of parents' perception, impact of parenting style was also studied. Parenting style was the environment that parents interacted and communicated with their children. It determined if parents' message could effectively convey to their children. The sampled parents were categorised into four styles according to Maccoby and Martin (1983)'s framework. Parenting style was also considered in the regression model and was found significant in predicting children's technology acceptance. Children who had demanding parents were more likely to have higher technology acceptance than the others. To summarise, it was concluded that parents' technology perception and parenting style would make a effect on children's intention to use technology. The result gave us implication on setting up IT strategies. Intergeneration instructional programmes for both parents and children could be a direction. At the same time, it was an emerging field of studying the effect of parenting on children's technology acceptance, further investigation was needed to substantiate the current findings.
