Abstract: Abstract Abstract of thesis entitled "Leadership for Process-oriented Social Development: A Path Towards Building Community" submitted by Bartholomew Shaha for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in October 2004. The concept of leadership for social development has changed dramatically in recent years as learning from the development experience began to support the method of participatory development geared towards the mobilisation and active involvement of people at the local grassroots level. However, in the rapid process of globalisation as the world faces unprecedented contradictions between peoples and nations, as large groups of people become impoverished and vulnerable, as the environment is systematically destroyed, and as communities are totally disintegrated, the agenda for building community characterised by justice and peace emerges as a top priority. Against the background of these critical situations, some of the key questions for us are: How do we train leaders and social workers to be critically conscious in order to be able to address the root causes of the problems through non-violent collective action? How do we really build community? What would be some of the core components and methodologies for training such leaders? What would move leaders to go beyond the conventional social work practice, towards an unconventional path that seeks an alternative paradigm of development? Analysing the limitations of the current participatory development approach, this research study proposes the notion of a Process-oriented Social Development defining it as a process of achieving holistic development in the context of the community through collective action, commitment to justice and peace, and maximum mobilisation of community resources, both human and financial. It is a process of building community amidst religious plurality and multiplicity of cultures. With this perspective in mind, the research study evaluated a leadership development programme that has been conducted by a regional organisation for over twenty years, to assess the outcome of the programme in achieving process-oriented social development. The evaluation was conducted through analysis of responses to a questionnaire survey sent to randomly selected former participants of the programme, analysis of the evaluation form filled in by participants immediately after the course, analysis of reports published on the programme, and this researcher's observations as the initiator and former facilitator of the programme. The evaluation identified four major trends in process-oriented development work currently being carried out by the participants of the programme. These are: 1) Community organising for empowerment of peoples; 2) Sustainable development; 3) Feminine gender conscious development; and, 4) Civil society building and networking. Findings show that the programme, while substantially productive, could incorporate several new dimensions towards its improvement for the future. Based on analysis of these findings a new programme design has been recommended, applicable for leadership for social transformation in general. The study also makes some suggestions for future research in this field. DOI: 10.5353/th_b2969790 Subjects: Leadership - Training ofCommunity development
