Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled STUDY OF CONIC SECTIONS AND PRIME NUMBERS IN CHINA: CULTURAL INFLUENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT, APPLICATION AND TRANSMISSION OF MATHEMATICAL IDEAS Submitted by LUI Ka-Wai for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2003 This thesis focuses on the historical development of two mathematical ideas: conic sections and prime numbers. Through the work of past mathematicians in the East and the West on these two ideas, the inuence of culture on the development, application, and transmission of mathematics was investigated. Three main questions were addressed. Firstly, the origin of the conic sections and the origin of prime numbers were considered. The theory of conic sections and prime numbers were developed in classical Greece, and were unknown to Chinese mathematicians, despite the long history of mathematics in China, until their transmission from Europe in the seventeenth century by the Jesuits. Their absence from the Chinese mathematical tradition is largely explained by cultural di(R)erences between Europe and China. Generally, the Chinese emphasized the application of mathematics while the Greeks emphasized the search for knowledge and the understanding of the universe. Secondly, the importance of conic sections for the development of astronomy was considered. An account of how the Europeans accepted a new idea in astron- omy and how the Church inuenced the transmission of the theory is given.Thirdly, the rst encounter of the East and the West in scientic discourse, and how the new scientic knowledge was exploited in China after its transmis- sion from Europe were considered. The transmission of conic sections and prime numbertheorystimulatedtheChinesetousethesetheoriestoconductresearchon astronomy. A number of mathematical works from the Qing dynasty which focus on the two new' ideas, conic sections and prime numbers, were considered. Understanding the cultural inuence on mathematics enables us to understand why mathematics developed in the particular way it did, and whether this inuence had a benecial or an adverse e(R)ect on its development.
