Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Memory as Text and Tactics: A Hermeneutics of Hong Kong Urban Culture" Submitted by Lau Man Yee, Eliza for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2002 _________________________________________________________________ The thesis uses the phenomenon of cultural amnesia in Hong Kong as a starting point to develop a hermeneutics of urban culture. Such a "dysfunction" of collective memory is interpreted not simply as an inability to remember but an unconscious desire to forget. In a city where the idea of "progress and prosperity" has monopolized the local cultural imaginary, "memory" often appears in the form of "preserved" or "embalmed" knowledge. This kind of nostalgic memory can paradoxically be a kind of forgetting. History is pushed into the realm of consumable and flattened images and a condition of "inflated visibility" dominates. This explains why the observed phenomenon of amnesia appears also to co-exist with a certain mnemonic fever: the two are complementary rather than antithetical. The city, understood as a phenomenon of modernity, is being recreated precisely in this tension between memory and forgetting. Through reading examples of "memory dysfunction" in various cultural texts, a tactic of cultural criticism is developed based on the patterns of re-organisation of collective memories and the conflicts between collective and subjective memories. Described as "thinking in memory terms," this tactic of reading makes it possible for the critic to leave the routes of grand narratives and venture into forgotten interstitial spaces of culture, allowing new connections and ways of understanding to take shape. In this cultural context, the theoretical work of Walter Benjamin on memory and culture is an important guide to the relationship between image, history and memory. The "dialectical image" is the "flashing image" that can be recognised only at certain historical moments, pointing to the elusiveness of "history" understood as a process of unfolding, in contrast to a uni-dimensional history devoid of all complexities. In this thesis, Hong Kong urban culture is used as a case study of memory as text and tactics. It includes analysis of two domains of cultural texts. The first domain is a focus on a number of paradoxes of collective memory that can be read from certain city monuments, popular and consumable images in the media, and examples of Hong Kong cinema. The second domain is a focus on the construction of affective maps of the city by a number of Hong Kong writers. This tactic of reading, best described as an interface between remembrance and amnesia, allows "missing links" in the development of urban culture to be visible again. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b2976108 Subjects: Memory in literature Hermeneutics
