Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled OPTICALLY-INJECTED SPIN CURRENT AND ITS SCATTERING EFFECT IN SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM WELLS Submitted by Hu Kaige for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in November 2007 In this thesis the spin photogalvanic eect and the scattering eect of the in- jected spin current are investigated theoretically in a (110)-grown semiconduc- tor quantum well with bulk-inversion asymmetry. The irradiation of polarized lights pumps electrons from the valence bands to the conduction bands of the system. Due to the spin splitting caused by the spin-orbit coupling, a pure spin current with out-of-plane polarization is injected by normally incident linearly polarized light while a spin-dependent photocurrent is injected by circularly polarized light. The solution of the optical Bloch equations is applied to cal- culate optical responses of the photocurrent and spin current. A ratio of the photocurrent caused by circularly polarized light to pure spin current causedby linearly polarized light, which is dependent on the material speci...c para- meters and frequency of the incident light, allows one to deduce the amplitude of optically-injected spin current from the experimentally measured photocur- rent. Thenthisoptically-inducedout-of-planespincurrentisappliedtoacross- shaped (110)-grown quantum well to study its scattering eect by means of the Landauer-Buttiker formalism in the tight binding approximation. It turns out thattransversechargecurrentsareinducedeitherinwardoroutward. Themea- surement of this type of charge currents may serve as an experimental probe of this spin current.
