Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled TRANSIENT RADIATION EMISSION FROM ASTROPHYSICAL JETS submitted by Wong Yuen Lam for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in September 2007 Jet emission is a common phenomenon in astronomy. This thesis gives a brief review on the previous studies and a report of a detailed numerical study on the application of a jet emission model on two kinds of transient astronomical events: the gamma-ray burst afterglows and the huge X-ray variations at the galactic nuclei of the non-active galaxies. It is commonly believed that jet emission is involved in gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows. This study works further on this model to stress the im- portance on the equal arrival time surface consideration in the GRB afterglow light curve calculations and also shows that some of the changes in model pa- rameters (i.e. electron energy fraction and the magnetic energy fraction of theshocked fluid) are able to produce sharp rebrighenings on the R-band afterglow light curves as required in many observations. This rebrightening model can be further tested by broadband studies. If the rebrightenings are induced by changes in these physical parameters, this study will have great implications on the studies on gamma-ray burst afterglows and shock accelerations. It is also found that jet emission may play an important role in explaining the huge X-ray variations occurring at the optically inactive galactic nuclei, which are generally interpreted as the radiation given out when a star is tidally disrupted by and part of the star is accreted to the galactic black hole. The rise in X-ray is classically explained to be related to the radiation from the accretiondisk, butitisfoundthatthejetemissionmodelalsogivesasatisfactory explanation to the observations of the late emission. The jet emission model predicts that sources of huge X-ray variations will also reveal themselves in the future gamma-ray mission GLAST.
