Abstract: Abstract The aims of this study were to examine the distributions of the body mass index (BMI) of Swedish children of three cohorts born in 1974, 1984 and 1990, from birth to 18 years, 15 years and 10 years of age respectively; the percentage of children with various levels of risks for adult overweight using the BMI cut-offs of 25 kg/m and 23 kg/m, and the prevalence of overweight and obesity using the adult cut-offs defined by the International Obesity Task Force; and the adiposity rebound of the three cohorts. The results showed that the distributions of the BMI values of the three cohorts from birth to 10 years, 15 years and 18 years of age were positively skewed. Approximately normal distributions of the BMI were achieved using the Box-Cox power transformation. Increasing BMI values in later cohorts were observed. At 10 years of age, the mean BMI values for cohorts in 74, 84 and 90 were 17.0 kg/m, 17.3 2 2 2 2 2 kg/m and 17.9 kg/m for girls, and 16.9 kg/m, 17.4 kg/m and 17.6 kg/m for boys respectively. The percentages at different percentage risks for overweight were calculated for the children of the three cohorts at various ages. In general, older children had higher percentage at risk for overweight. Based on the risk functions and 2 2 the link to adult cut-offs of 25 kg/m for overweight and 30 kg/m for obesity, the prevalence for overweight and obesity at adulthood in children of the three cohorts varied from 8.6% to 23.2% and 0.3% to 4.1% respectively for girls, and from 5.8% to 16.8% and 0.3% to 3.6% respectively for boys from 3 to 17 years of age. Increasing prevalence in overweight and obesity was found in children of later cohorts. The mean age at adiposity rebound ranged from 5.54 to 5.77 years of age for girls and from 5.50 to 6.14 years of age for boys based on the estimation from mean BMI curves, and from 6.12 to 6.34 years of age for girls and 6.11 to 6.46 years of age for boys based on the estimation from individual BMI curves. Children of cohort in 90 i achieved the adiposity rebound significantly earlier than children of other cohorts. Both the age at adiposity rebound and the BMI at adiposity rebound were significant predictors of the BMI at 10 years of age for the three cohorts. In conclusion, a secular trend of increasing overweight and obesity in Swedish children from 1974 to 2000 was observed and there is a pressing need for public health interventions to prevent or reduce the rising prevalence of childhood obesity. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3984907 Subjects: Body mass index - Sweden Children - Sweden
