Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Acquisition of Cantonese Sortal Classifiers in Cantonese-English Bilinguals Submitted by Miss Poy-San Chung For the degree of Masters of Arts At the University of Hong Kong In August 2007 The bi-directional linguistic interaction in bilinguals along with the U- shaped acquisition curve is well documented in current literature. This paper seeks to answer if classifier acquisition also follows the purported U-shaped model, if so, how similar or different is the bilingual curve from their monolingual peers. If there is a difference, what is the cause of the difference? Cantonese data from bilingual children exposed to English and Cantonese from birth, is analysed to ascertain whether the development and acquisition of classifiers was affected when the dominant language was Cantonese. A quantitative and qualitative analysis was performed using the data available from CHILDES. The findings show the following: (1) The bilinguals and monolingual Cantonese speakers in the acquisition of go3 and zek3 follow the partial U-shaped curve; (2) the remaining sortal classifiers do not follow the purported U-shaped curve; (3) the bilinguals over-generalise go3 more extensively than their monolingual peers; (4) the acquisition of the remaining classifiers are similar to their monolingual peers but differs with respect to gaan1 which is under-extended and; (5) adult input is correlated to child output. The findings can be explained using the language markedness hypothesis, socio-cultural theory and the emergentist theory. It is suggested that type and token frequency of classifier input provided by parents and their caregivers play a central role in the child's acquisition of language.
