Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Web-Based Intelligent Decision Support System for Optimization of Polishing Process Planning Submitted by Ngai Ka Kui For the degree of Master of Philosophy At the University of Hong Kong In August 2007 Abstract Polishing process adds considerable values to many products manufactured by Hong Kong. At present, the determination of polishing quality standards is often a subjective process that does not optimize the relationship between quality, value added, and production costs. There is a lack of scientific approach to represent and implement an analysis of product and process to polishing and other manufacturing. This often results in products of inferior quality and a failure to i exploit new materials, products and equipment. The aim of this research is to investigate a web-based intelligent decision support system through innovative uses of polishing technologies. This research first creates an important knowledge base of polishing features, their associated quality levels and process parameters through experiments and field studies within a collaborating company. This knowledge base is used to establish a systematic and scientific reference framework for specifying polishing quality levels, requirements and features. It achieves its functions to facilitate an information classification based on product-oriented technology, and to support the knowledge sharing within the company. From a knowledge management perspective, it structures the valuable polishing information collected for retrieval and reuse. A proposed Web Based Portal System (WBPS) is then developed to implement process planning that aims to streamline polishing product and process. This web application system presents an on-line intelligent support for determining the most suitable configuration for polishing operations on basis of customer requirements on polishing quality levels and past polishing projects of the polishing company. The system comprises of four modules to perform complex functions. It provides a web framework as a mediator to allow sharing, planning and configuration of structured polishing information. ii Thirdly, Case Based Process Planning (CBPP) model is developed to gain a fundamental understanding of polishing processes and to optimize polishing process plans that are delivered as a decision support. CBPP incorporates the concepts of Case Based Reasoning (CBR) and Fuzzy Set Theory (FST) for addressing an automatic process planning. It is capable of inferring principal process parameters for a new polishing problem. Moreover, various mathematical programming models are employed to support the optimization computation of process parameter settings. Finally, numerical data of nine cooker samples from the collaborating company were collected for model demonstration. One cooker case was treated as a problem case, while others were treated as stored case in case-base. Detailed analysis was taken in four parts. Based on product structure of problem case and polishing quality levels requested by users, a case among the stored cases is retrieved. The retrieved case then proceeds to reasoning stage, where correlations of its process parameters to quality levels are computed.
