Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled \Estimation of Blood Glucose Variations using Noninvasive Metabolic Measurements" Submitted by Lee Chi Yeung for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2007 Inthisstudy, anovelmethodhasbeendesignedtoestimatebloodglucosevari- ations without blood sampling. The concept of this noninvasive method is based on the glucose metabolic process in the human body. The data acquisition phase was implemented by measuring metabolic parameters including heat dissipation by conduction at the ngertip, percentage oxygen content of expired air and ex- piratory ow rate. A data analysis phase was performed to convert the measured parameterstovariationsoffeaturesincludingvariationsofaverageheatdissipation by conduction and variations of resting metabolic rate, which would become input of the trained classication model for estimation of blood glucose variations. The classication model can be a 2-class to 5-class system showing di(R)erent resolutions for the extents of blood glucose variations. In the experimental trial, a total of 190 data points were obtained from 31 normal and 159 type 2 dia- betic subjects. The classication accuracies for 2-class to 5-class system were 82.48%, 84.26%, 71.98% and 71.82% respectively using a linear discriminant clas- sier. Pearson's correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were also per- formedtocomparethevariationsofmetabolicfeatureswiththevariationsofblood glucose concentration. The regression result obtained a correlation coecient of 0.88. Preliminary results indicated that this method has the potential to be used as blood glucose variation monitors and lifestyle educating devices to supplement thengerstickmethodthatallowsnormal, pre-diabeticandtype2diabeticpersons to monitor their own blood glucose on a regular basis outside clinics.
