Abstract: ABSTRACT USING WEB-BASED MEDIA TEXTS TO ENHANCE SECONDARY STUDENTS' MOTIVATION IN ENGLISH LEARNING by Cheung Wing Sze, Helen, MEd. The University of Hong Kong, 2006 Supervisor: Dr. K.K. Tong The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of using web-based media texts to enhance students' motivation in learning English. In this study, which lasted about four months, web-based media materials were selected to help students improve their motivation in learning English. Research results revealed that students' motivation in learning English would be enhanced with the help of hypermedia texts, which were considered to be more dynamic and interactive, and they were prone to more frequent use of the web-based materials for English learning. Students' feedback of using electronic media texts in learning English during lessons was encouraging. However, the study revealed that it was not easy to select practical and appropriate materials on the Internet for English vteaching purposes, as students were still concerned about dealing with the internal and external examinations. They considered the hypertexts as versatile and interesting, however, most of the text could not help the students much in tackling the public examinations. In addition, even though students tended to surf more on the Internet for English enhancement, they could hardly develop a long-term self-regulated habit of using electronic media materials in learning English at their own time without the teacher's guidance.
