Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled PETROGENESIS OF PERMIAN FLOOD BASALTS AND MAFIC- ULTRAMAFIC INTRUSIONS IN THE JINPING (SW CHINA) AND SONG DA (NORTHERN VIETNAM) DISTRICTS Submitted by Yan Wang for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2006 Flood basalts and mafic-ultramafic plutons in the Jinping (SW China)-Song Da (northern Vietnam) district form the southernmost part of the 260-Ma Emeishan large igneous province. High-Ti and low-Ti series are identified in these rocks in terms of TiO contents and Ti/Y ratios. Rocks of the high-Ti series are composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, magnetite, ilmenite and minor biotite and apatite, whereas those of the low-Ti series consist of clinopyroxene, olivine, plagioclase and minor magnetite. The plutons are interpreted to be conduits that fed the overlying basalts, and there are four distinct types: (1) high-Ti gabbroic intrusions equivalent in composition to the high-Ti basalts, which are unmineralized; (2) low-Ti, PGE-rich olivine gabbroic intrusions, equivalent to PGE-enriched low-Ti basalts and associated picrites, which formed from S-undersaturated magmas; (3) low-Ti PGE-depleted gabbroic intrusions, equivalent to PGE-depleted low-Ti basalts, which formed from magmas that underwent sulfide saturation due to extensive crustal contamination; and (4) low-Ti mafic- ultramafic intrusions hosting Ni-Cu-(PGE) sulfide deposits. Rocks of the high-Ti series display a narrow range of εNd(t) values (+0.5 to +1.1) and low (Th/Nb) ratios ( 1.4), similar to those derived from an OIB-like enriched pm mantle source. They are enriched in LREE and have low Al O /TiO ratios. The REE 2 3 2 patterns with negative sloping HREE indicate that the primary melts were generated by small degrees of partial melting at garnet-stable depths. Rocks of the low-Ti series include LREE-depleted and LREE-enriched picrites, basalts, olivine gabbros and gabbros. The LREE-depleted picrites have positive εNd(t) values (+7.0) and show Th depletion, suggesting a depleted mantle source and high degrees of anhydrous melting at relatively shallow mantle depths. The LREE-enriched picrites with negative εNd(t) values (-7.8) indicate a mantle source locally modified by subducted oceanic crust. Low-Ti basalts and gabbros with variable chemical compositions formed from crustally contaminated picritic magmas. The sulfide-bearing intrusion in Baimazhai is a concentric body, with a central massive ore body ( 20 vol.%) surrounded by orthopyroxenite, websterite and gabbro. Silicate rocks in the intrusion are rich in LREE and show negative Nb and Ta anomalies with εNd(t) values ranging from -3.3 to -8.4. Both massive ores and silicate rocks have similar Pd/Pt and Cu/Pd ratios, indicating a single sulfide-saturation event. Immiscible sulfide melts segregated from Si- and Mg-rich basaltic magmas in a deep-seated staging magma chamber due to extensive crustal contamination (up to 35%) before emplacement. The immiscible sulfide melts along with orthopyroxene-bearing silicate melts were eventually evacuated from the magma chamber by compressive forces. The intrusion is interpreted as a conduit through which a flowing silicate melt laden with accumulated orthopyroxene crystals and sulfide liquid passed. The migrating magma underwent flow differentiation due to higher vel
