Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Process Roaming" Submitted by Sai Chuen HO for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in October 2007 Process migration is a useful mechanism in distributed systems, as it sup- ports efcient process execution and better resource utilization through dy- namic load balancing and improved data localities. However, process migra- tion can be an expensive operation if the entire address space of a migrant is transferred to the destination node before its execution is resumed. Several studies have proposed postponing the transfer of memory pages until they are accessed by migrants. While this approach keeps migration latency minimal, migrants are often executed in sub-optimal performance because of the time- consuming inter-node page faults. As a result, process migration has appeared benecial to a narrow range of compute-intensive applications. To solve these issues, it is necessary to achieve a better trade-off between migration latency and the execution performance of migrants. In this study, we propose a new distributed system support called process roaming (PR), which aims to achieve low freeze time and high execution ef- ciency of processes and migrants. Compared to traditional process migration, PR has two unique design perspectives. First, unlike process migration whichii considers the execution and the process address space as a whole, PR aims to separate the two. It provides mechanisms that manage migrations of the execution and any page in the address space separately, thereby allowing the execution and fragments of the address space to distribute arbitrarily in a sys- tem. Second, while process migration is an act to transfer a process from one node to another, PR is designed as a distributed execution environment which encourages collaboration of multiple nodes to improve the execution efciency of a process or its migrant. These new elements enable a more exible form of process movement and resource management in distributed systems. To achieve low freeze time, PR computes the current working set of a pro- cess, called the "dependent zone," and migrates only this zone during process migration. This technique avoids the transfer of the entire address space, while at the same time allows the process to resume execution immediately at the destination node. After a process is migrated, PR analyzes the spatial locality of its memory references and iteratively prefetches memory pages from remote to avoid stalls caused by page faults. PR adopts a unique algorithm to decide which and how many pages to prefetch. This algorithm tends to prefetch more aggressively when a sequential access pattern is developed, when the paging rate of the process is high or when the network or the remote node is busy. This advanced strategy makes PR highly adaptive to different types of appli- cations and systems dynamics. HPC Challenge benchmark results show that PR achieves its goal of supporting process migration with little overhead. PR enables a process address space to span across computers through a tai- lored distributed virtual memory (DVM) support. By using the DVM and the effective prefetching techniques, PR incorporates the new concept of cooper-iii ative migration. The benchmark results show that these features can further enhance the execution efciency of migrants.
