Abstract: ABSTRACT of thesis entitled DISAGGREGATE ANALYSES OF STATED PREFERENCE DATA FOR CAPTURING PARKING CHOICE BEHAVIOR submitted by WONG SHING TAT for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in February 2006 Parking control measures are becoming increasingly important in the regulation of traffic and urban development. The choice of parking places is influenced by a number of factors, such as parking fee and security of a parking place. In this thesis, a conjoint study analyzes the tradeoff between the three most significant influencing factors, search time, walking time and hourly parking fee. The thesis also presents a stated preference survey which collected rankings of nine parking alternatives from car owners. Each parking alternative is characterized by the three influencing factors. A linear additive preference function with fixed reference point of utility is specified. The linear parameters were estimated by a Monotone Calibration model, which is developed in the research study. The model addresses the monotonic order of a ranking and applies to the analysis of individual rankings. Model comparisons with Logit type model, ordinary least squares regression and monotone pairwise regression indicates that the monotone model provides solutions of less reversed orders and minimum error sum of utility differences. The disaggregate analysis established log-normality of subjective values of travel time for compensatory behavior. The results reveal a mixed choice behavior of respondents. The featured conjoint study involves one set of simple stated preference questionnaires, the specification of the preference function with fixed reference point, and the estimation by the calibration model.
