Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Putting Practice into Practice: A Journey of Positioning 15 years of Architectural Experience into Teaching the Associate degree of Architectural Studies Submitted by CHENG Yan Oi, Debbie [BA(Hons.), DipArch, MA(Dist.) Sheffield, RIBA, ARCUK, Assoc. Mem. HKIA] for the degree of Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Design + Management at the University of Hong Kong in November 2006 Education is currently undergoing a reform / transition period all over the world, not to mention in Hong Kong. I myself have gone through a transition period too from practicing Architecture to being back in part-time student life at Masters of Science (Interdisciplinary Design and Management) (MIDM) of the University of Hong Kong and teaching full time the Associate of Science degree in Architectural Studies. It is believed that Architectural Studies is a very 'problem-based' process in which architects are trained to solve problems. Since I was trained in the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom in the early 80s when a more traditional 'subject-based learning' (PBL) approach was adopted, the 'problem-based learning' approach is new to me. A whole mind-set has to be adjusted to the role of teaching, which I did benefit from MIDM. The focus of this dissertation is to explore and research where 'problem-based learning' can assist to apply in systems thinking (learnt from the course of MIDM) and how to create 'synergy' to get to the point of 'win-win' for all stakeholders in the construction industry disregard personal discovery of 'real life PBL' experiences at different stages of my life and the application of what I learnt help me as a PBL facilitator in the teaching role. This would be a personal bibliography of my own unique journey and a kind of action research with lessons learnt about myself. Informal surveys are summarized from the feedback of the reflective journals from Year 1 students of the AScAS course; questionnaire feedback is also obtained from my fellow colleagues / teaching staff with different views and observations on the PBL approach. The University Grant Council (UGC) has asked "local universities to show that they have thought through the 'learning outcomes' they expect the students to achieve, and they are organizing educational experience to enable students to achieve these outcomes... taken together, these features of a well-designed and well-delivered higher education amount to a demand that learners and learning should be central to education quality work" which the University is going to adopt. Problem-based learning is a way of achieving this outcomes-based learning and we are already a step ahead in this exercise.
