Abstract: Abstract of thesis titled The politics of alliance: The United Front work on the Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong, 1950s - 1980s Submitted by Lee Chin Hang for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August 2006 Government-business relations have long represented one of the most interesting issues in both the media and academia. In Hong Kong, relations between the Chinese capitalists and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are largely carried out through the United Front. Although the scope and scale of this United Front are large, analysis of its theory and practice has been seriously lacking. This thesis aims to show and explain how the relations between the Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong and the CCP evolved between the 1950s and the 1980s. This thesis has two major parts: It will first undertake an analytical and historical investigation to illustrate the complicated nature of the United Front work and operations. Secondly, it will examine the interactions and inter-relations between the Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong and the CCP. To achieve the above aim, this thesis has tried its best to exhaust and utilize all accessible sources, for instance: Personal 3interviews, autobiographies, memoirs, the Guangdong Provincial Archives, newspapers and other original publications. Instead of a linear, chronological analysis, this thesis has adopted an issue-based approach to examine the United Front work on the Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong. This thesis concludes that the whole operation of the CCP's United Front work on the Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong was a sophisticated one: On the one hand, it was prepared and carried out in great detail; on the other hand, it comprised various individual and institutional, official and non-party actors in central Beijing, peripheral Guangdong and local Hong Kong. This thesis also finds that, within the colonial context, the Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong, with their subjective considerations and perceptions, developed two major types of inter-relations with the communists - namely, collaboration and non-compliance. The five selected 'representative' Chinese capitalists in Hong Kong that serve as illustrative cases in this thesis are expected to facilitate better analysis.
