Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Assessing the Services and Value of Green Spaces in Urban Ecosystem: A Case of Guangzhou City Submitted by Chen Yan, Wendy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2006 This study assesses the value of five principal groups of ecosystem services generated by urban green spaces (UGS) in urban ecosystems, including recreation and amenities, air pollutant removal, balancing atmospheric O and CO, 2 2 microclimate regulation, and rainwater retention, taking Guangzhou City as an empirical case study. UGS contribute to the sustainability and healthy urban life through the provision of effective services. However, little research has been conducted on ecosystem services in urban areas. In Chinese cities, which undergo rapid development and transformation, conflicts relating to land use, degradation of environment, and rising expectation of quality of urban life have emerged. It helps to acquire a comprehensive understanding of UGS and their contribution as a form of natural capital with a view to better provision and design and more efficient management. Through in situ investigation and interpretation of aerial photographs, the state of UGS in Guangzhou has been explored. The development history and greenery management have largely determined existing patterns, which have affected the capacity and the efficiency of ecosystem services. Questionnaire survey and contingent valuation method were adopted to analyze residents' knowledge and attitudes towards UGS and calculate the provision of recreation and amenities. The findings indicated that there was a widespread 2 recognition of ecosystem services. UGS were actively used for recreation and amenity purpose, and the value of this ecosystem service was estimated at RMB547.09 million per annum. The study has demonstrated that carefully designed and pre-tested contingent valuation method was a potentially useful approach for further research on hitherto non-priced environmental goods in China. A set of quantification equations with parameters adjusted according to local geographical conditions were applied to calculate the other four ecosystem services and the replacement cost approach was used to assess their value. In 2000, UGS contributed to improving local air quality through removing about 1,924 t main air pollutants (valued at RMB0.54 million). Summer cooling effect through evapotranspiration was estimated at RMB573.5 million. The value of balancing atmospheric CO and O was RMB78.5 million, denoting 144,792 t CO sequestered 2 2 2 and 105,276 t O released. The value of rainwater retention was RMB62.6 million. Overall, the total value of five sets of important ecosystem services was about RMB1262.23 million. In the same year, the total investment on the management and maintenance of UGS was only RMB82.7 million. Notable differences exist between this case study and western cities, which reflect the differences of culture, market mechanism, characteristics of UGS, and value judgement. To sustain UGS and maximize their benefits, it is necessary to increase green area, to improve the species diversity, to locate appropriate species in right places, to increase financial support, to enact effective regulations and enforcement, and finally to encourage residents' participation in the management of greening proje
