Schools do not exist in a contextual vacuum, instead, the context in which a school is situated exerts continuous influence on it, while the diversity and intensity of such contextual influence varies, the response of the school organization also takes many forms. While schools have different culture, tradition, leadership style, resource, etc., the innovative pedagogical practices (IPP) they implemented also differs. The main purpose of this dissertation is to explore school disposition to change in relation to the IPPs they implemented. Clarifying this relationship helps us to understand why some innovative changes are more sustainable and transferable than others. The findings provide clues for school administrators as well as teachers who need to take action, and would like to see IPP take root in their school. With the help of current literature and theories on educational change; the concept of school disposition is clarified and articulated twofold: that is (i) autonomy or self-sufficiency in reaction to contextual influences; and (ii) readiness to innovate and change (e.g. staff competence, readiness of resources, etc.). These conceptual dimensions - School Autonomy and School Readiness together generates a typology of school disposition. To examine cases of IPP in the light of this typology, an instrument for coding case data was developed. This study is qualitative in nature, and the methodology adopted is a combination of case study research and content analysis. ii School cases are selected and analyzed from the data sets of the Module 2 of the Second Information Technology in Education Studies (SITES). More than 30 cases were selected from a preliminary screening using the online search engine, and then reviewed in detail. From these 30 cases, a total of 22 are coded using the instrument mentioned (altogether nine local cases and 13 overseas cases), totaling approximately 12.6% of all 174 SITES cases. Typical school cases that resemble the school disposition types as stipulated in the theoretical framework were solicited. The IPPs initiated by each of the school types were analyzed to expose the relation between them and the school disposition, in this way the relationship between school characteristics and the nature of innovation was established. Furthermore, cases from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) were also selected for analysis; "harvesting" a cohort of cases with shared, homogeneous contextual factors and influences. The purpose of this procedure is to see if the arguments using the analysis of typical cases could be useful to account for IPPs in Hong Kong. In summary, this exploratory study leads to the identification of four school types with a differential level of school autonomy and readiness in implementing IPPs. These four types are: assimilating and instituting change; exploring change under constraints; followers of change; and lastly, coping with change. Finally, the theoretical framework was refined and revised with the data from the typical cases as well as the local cases. The significance of this study: firstly, it sheds light on the importance of school autonomy in relation to IPPs, particularly the efforts in instituting change, which is crucial to IPPs sustainability and transferability. Secondly, this study offers a
