Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Written English Errors: A Case Study of One Secondary School in Hong Kong submitted by Karson Chu for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong September, 2005 In this study, 15 English compositions written by 15 Hong Kong students were collected and their errors analyzed. The errors were analyzed according to an error classification scheme developed by combining previous error classification schemes, including general error classification schemes and specific, Chinese-English Interlanguage- (CIL) oriented classification schemes. This combination of the general and the specific was found to be necessary in order to examine students' errors in a comprehensive way. The number of errors was counted and each error was grouped under an error type. The resulting data indicate that CIL was strongly present in the compositions, and that the errors spanned a great range of error types, of which six were identified: 1) verb structure, 2) single words, 3) concord/agreement, 4) sentence structure, 5) connectives, and 6) lexis.
