September 2005 Abstract The overt use of language arts does not seem to be a common practice in the teaching of German in Hong Kong. This study has thus been conducted to find out the effects of incorporating language arts activities in the German classroom. The focus of the study was on how language arts activities affected affective aspects of students' learning such as their motivation and enjoyment of the classes, their learning effort and their learning outcomes. Language arts activities used mainly involved fairy tales and poetry. It was found that fairy tales were more easily accepted by students than poetry. Nevertheless, an increase in motivation and enjoyment could be observed for both fairy tales and poetry and improved output became evident in students' assignments. Thus it can be concluded that the use of language arts in the German classroom can enhance students' learning. Findings of this study motivated the development of a new course "Learning German through Fairy Tales." This new course will hopefully also lead to increased motivation on the students' part, which subsequently should result in improved learning outcomes.
