Abstract: Developing Learner Autonomy Through Self-Access Tsang Wai Yi Fiona Abstract Learner autonomy is considered essential in relation to life-long learning and whole-person development as has been stated in the proposed curriculum changes by Curriculum Development Council in Hong Kong since 2000. In view of the increasing importance of autonomy and the proliferation of self-access centres in the local tertiary and secondary contexts, this study sets out to examine the development of autonomy with a low-resourced self-access centre in a Hong Kong secondary school. A listening project was done in a self-access mode. In an attempt to extend previous efforts on self-access, data is aggregated on changes of learners' study habits and confidence in managing their own learning as well as actual language gain. The findings show that a low-resourced centre can enhance learner autonomy which enables learners to exploit the environment for their own learning sake. With teacher's help, learners can conduct their own learning which can help them to make language gain. They had ability in choosing suitable materials, assessing and evaluating their performance and monitoring their progress. While learners with poor, average and good proficiency in English all benefit, the average ones seem to be the greatest beneficiaries. Most of them are much more motivated and have more language gain than the other two groups as a result of the self-access mode of learning.
