Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "An Empirical Study of the Factors Affecting Individual Performance Using a Modified Task-Technology Fit Approach" Submitted by CHUN YU GRACE for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in September 2005 st In the 21 century, information technology has become an essential component in academia and the business world. The demand to invest in information technology with limited capital expenditures available in both business corporations and academic institutions worldwide has made user acceptance an increasingly critical factor in technology implementation and technology management. In addition, from the management perspective, identifying and retaining top performers has become increasingly important, which has led to the significance of studying the measurements of individuals' performance. Previous research that focuses on well-known user acceptance models such as TAM, TRA and DOI has been reported extensively in the past IS literature. However, this line of research has rarely concentrated on the impact of IT on individuals' performance or on the influence of the internal task environment or the external environment on an individual's performance. In response, this study attempts to fill this gap and focuses - 2 - on the Task Technology Fit (TTF) model, a user acceptance model that investigates the degree to which technology assists an individual to perform his or her portfolio of tasks. This study extends the TTF model by incorporating portal support, user satisfaction and social influence into the original model. An online survey of MyLibary usage was conducted in this study. The findings show that technology characteristics are the only critical factor affecting the degree of task-technology fit, while task characteristics and portal support are insignificant factors that do not affect the degree of TTF. The result also shows that the degree of TTF and utilization are the major factors affecting individual performance. The newly added constructs of user satisfaction and social influence are found to be less critical in influencing individual performance. The findings of this research study contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the factors affecting individual performance in particular when the individual is using information systems/technology to complete a task. These findings provide useful insights for practitioners when designing and developing information systems/technology that aim to assist an individual in carrying out particular tasks. This study contributes another piece of evidence to build the framework of task-technology fit. - 3 - DOI: 10.5353/th_b3162584 Subjects: Performance Information technology Work - Effect of technological innovations on
