Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Expert System Rules for the Classification of Road Intersections and Turns in Hong Kong Submitted by Li Zhijie for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in July 2005 Road intersections are important places in road networks where traffic flows bound for different directions and routes. Determining a correct direction to turn is not an easy task for drivers, because a wrong choice may lead to extra long distance and time for the travel. Pre-awareness about the types of road intersection and turn possibilities will enable drivers to make smart decisions in a dynamic situation of road navigation. Manual encoding of turn information is a time-consuming job when establishing a digital road network. The number of turn directions multiplies as the number of road intersections or road segments increases. In the case of Hong Kong, road networks are complicated with different road elements and under intense traffic treatments during rush hours. There is not a shortage of elevated and convoluted roadways among skyscrapers. This research presumes that geographic information systems (GIS) can be used to assist in the process of encoding turn possibilities through integration with an expert system. An expert system expects to enhance the intelligence of a GIS by turning knowledge into practice. Expert system rules encode knowledge derived from the systematic analysis of characteristics of road intersections and turn restrictions to create turn information. Such rules will enable the automatic processing of turn information in a GIS environment. The thesis is a systematic and technical research involving the integration of technologies of GIS in transportation and expert systems. It attempts to extract knowledge about road networks in Hong Kong that helps establish expert system rules for the classification of road intersections and turns. The outcome of the research is an automatic process of creating a turntable, which is an essential input in routing analysis and network navigation.
