About the Book

This title was first published in 2003.Tayfur's theoretical approach to foreign policy analysis is original and represents an extremely valuable addition to a field which is under-theorised. It develops the World-System theory of Wallerstein and Arrighi. In applying this theory to two case studies, Tayfur offers a detailed account of the domestic and foreign policies of Greece and Spain after the Second World War. He illuminates in particular their turn from a foreign policy orientation towards the United States to a growing identification with, and eventual integration into, the European Community. This original book is pertinent to a range of contemporary debates and suitable to feature on the reading lists of every course on foreign policy analysis and international political theory. In addition, students of comparative politics, political transition and Mediterranean studies, will find this book particularly useful.

Review :
’Fatih Tayfur has written an ambitious and original book, at once a contribution to the comparative study of foreign policy making in regard to Spain and Greece, and an application of world systems theory to the field of international relations. By analyzing these Mediterranean states, Tayfur illustrates how an intermediate position in the world economy shapes not only economic but also political relations: in so doing he has pioneered the integration of two previously separate theoretical approaches to foreign policy and demonstrated the relevance of each to the countries in question.' Professor Fred Halliday, London School Economics, London, UK ’Dr Tayfur offers an original theoretical approach to foreign policy analysis based on World Systems theory. His application of the concept of semiperipheral states to Greece and Spain after the Second World War illuminates their turn to a growing identification with, and eventual integration into, the European Community. Based on rich empirical detail, this book is as interesting and valuable for regional specialists and comparativists as it is for international political theorists and foreign policy analysts.’ Professor Margot Light, London School of Economics, UK '...both specialists and general readers will benefit from Tayfur's well-written and informative book. As the only English language monograph that comparatively and systematically analyzes Greek and Spanish foreign policies, Tayfur's book is highly valuable and will prove quite welcome in the political science literature.' The European Legacy '...this book will be of great interest to students of international systems of states...' Journal of European Integration History '...a book that should be very muich on top of the reading lists of all major European decision makers...Professor Tayfur's well-written, interesting world-system study on the trajectory of Greece and Spain in their accession to the Euorpean Union would be an event in itself, but th
