About the Book

This book outlines the geospatial technologies and analytical tools needed for safeguarding built infrastructure assets from natural disasters, and preparing for disaster resilience and risk reduction. It takes a whole life approach to infrastructure destruction and the related cost of natural disaster. It reviews weather related natural disasters exacerbated by climate change, deforestation, agricultural loss and public health risk, and commercial loss, and discusses the significance of infrastructure and urban growth on disaster risk. Topics include infrastructure resilience management, critical lifeline infrastructure performance, and recovery and mitigation. Several real world examples are presented. Throughout it applies the tools of computational modeling, remote sensing, risk mapping, and other spatial technologies.

Table of Contents:
Overview of Natural Disaster Impacts on The Built Environment. Historical Overview of Natural Disasters and Their Global Impacts. Climate Impacts Contributing to Natural Disasters. Lessons from The 21st Century’s Natural Disasters. Disaster Destruction of Infrastructure Systems and Their Impacts on Society. Disaster Resilience Management and Geospatial Technologies. Disaster Response, Recovery, and Mitigation Management. Disaster Resilience Management Framework and Disaster Risk Reduction. Geospatial Decision Support Systems. Applications of Spaceborne Remote Sensing and Other Spatial Technologies. Whole Life Approach for Safeguarding Lifeline Infrastructure Systems. Computational Modeling and Geospatial Analysis, Case Studies, the Future. Computational Modeling and Disaster Risk Vulnerability Mapping. Geospatial Case Studies of Worldwide Natural Disasters. Resilience, Performance, and Recovery of Lifeline Infrastructure and Mitigation. Future Directions for Disaster Resilience Management of Infrastructure.

About the Author :
Dr. Waheed Uddin is Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology at The University of Mississippi. He has been a pavement expert for the United Nations, and has over 35 years of professional and research experience in highways, airports, air quality, traffic management, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. A pioneer in airborne laser mapping and satellite imagery applications in transportation infrastructure and disaster impact assessment, Dr. Uddin’s transportation and disaster mapping research products were implemented for the 2005 Hurricane Katrina impact assessment on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and after the 2010 floods in Pakistan, and 2011 floods in Thailand.
