Excerpt from Revue Pédagogique, Vol. 56: Janvier-Juin 1910 Les sensations qui sont les premiers éléments de la vie réelle sont par suite les fondements de cette sorte de vie seconde qu'est la vie littéraire. Aristote en remarquant que les hommes qui ont la chair rude sont mal doués pour l'intelligence nous justifie de croire que la finesse de l'esprit s'établit d'abord sur celle des sens. Les grands esprits ne sont pas du tout de purs esprits; ces vives lumières ne brillent pas dans des chairs froides et molles; la première supériorité des bons écrivains est dans la vigueur ou la délicatesse de leurs impressions. Le sens littéraire c'est donc d'abord les sens tout simplement, et la première culture littéraire ne peut ètre que celle des sens; c'est à quoi l'on ne donne pas toujours assez d'attention lorsqu'on se propose d'émouvoir aux plus beaux rythmes de nos poètes de jeunes paysans placides. La vertu littéraire d'une sensation tient à deux facteurs à sa précision et à sa faculté d'association. Sa précision permet d'y attacher un mot, signe permanent d'une impression bien distincte une sensation très précise fournit le mot aigu et ferme de la prose didactique; une sensation diffuse et profonde suscite le mot tout chargé de poésie. Quant à la facilité d'une sensation à s'associer à d'autres elle donne au mot sa puissance d'évocation. Une sensation isolée, qui n'en éveille aucune autre, est propre à la prose; une sensation qui se communique à l'ètre entier en y produisant des impressions harmoniques est essen tiellement poétique. Chez certaines gens, à cet égard, les impressions demeurent localisées; les autres, sous un seul choc, résonnent tout entiers; leur âme toujours totalement active est pour ainsi dire unanime.
