Goethes "stella haucht er, in einer fein geistig gegliederten Darstellung, auf die Bühne hin, als die politische und soziale Revolution (wie auch früher stets) gleichzeitig eine erotische nach sich zieht. Büchners "dantons Tod, dieser mit wenigen Strichen wild und zerrissen hingeworfenen drama tischen Studie, bläst er den Lebensodem ein, als sich mitten im Kriege bereits die ersten Revolutions zeichen am fernen Horizont zeigen. Lenzens "soldaten, das urwuchsige Sturm: und Drang drama, schleudert er auf die Bretter, als der Krieg immer deutlicher das Treiben einer Soldateska, hüben wie drüben, gewahr werden läßt. Den reinen Naturalismus der Hinterhaustragik und des sozialen Elends überwindet er, vor fünfzehnjahren, durch eine Aufführung des Shakespeare schen "sommernachtstraum, und als, vor dem Kriege, die deutsche Menschheit nach neuen religiösen Zielen verlangend die Hände reckt, greift er in den Schatz der mittelalterlichen Mysterienspiele und holt sich das Spiel "leder: mann und Das Mirakel von der Nonne und der heiligen ]ungfrau heraus. Immer und immer wieder ist es das Menschliche, das er, _in all dem bunten Wirrwarr der Zeiterscheinungen, hoch und heilig wie den Gral emporhebt über die All: täglichkeit und ihn den Zuschauer bald von dieser, bald von jener Seite betrachten läßt, um ihn m die Seelen hineinleuchten zu lassen.
