About the Book

The operations sergeant major for 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment when that unit began fighting in Fallujah in November 2004 under Marine Regimental Combat Team 7, Darrin Bohn quickly found himself thrust into the role of command sergeant major when the battalion's original CSM was killed early in this combined-joint urban assault known as Operation Phantom Fury. "Up until then" said Bohn, "people were getting shot at, don't get me wrong, but I think it really woke people up when he got killed because, hey, if the sergeant major can get killed, this is some serious shit and they realized they had to get focused. Not that the guys weren't focused before then, but it kind of put everybody into the mindset that there was no coming back from this." In this interview, Bohn discusses this leadership challenge in great depth and shares his unique perspectives into the overall role his heavy mechanized battalion played in this decisive battle. He discusses the lows - such as Alpha Company's loss of its commander and executive officer - as well as the highs, such as the stellar performance of 2-2 soldiers: "When they were asked to do something, regardless of the plan, those kids would pick anything up and make it look like a genius put it together," Bohn said. "Those guys never gave up, always had a positive attitude and brought it to the enemy 24 hours a day. They were just non stop - kicking ass and taking names." In addition, Bohn covers a variety of training and equipment issues, the joint aspects of working with Marines and Air Force, and comments at length on the enemy forces they faced. "I was surprised that a guy couldn't shoot a rifle but, at a full sprint, he can shoot an RPG and pretty much hit what he's aiming at. Maybe it's like how some Americans put footballs in babies' cribs," he quipped, "maybe they put RPGs in theirs."
