About the Author :

Nell received her certificate in Midwifery from State University of New York (Downstate) and her MS in Midwifery from Philadelphia University. Nell became a Certified Nurse-Midwife in 1986. She has been actively involved in women’s health care since 1977. She has been a childbirth educator, a birth photographer, a labor and birth nurse, a nurse-midwife, a midwifery educator and author, and a maternal child health consultant in public health. Nell is committed to expanding midwifery and health equity for all people in every health care setting. Her passion is bridging the gap between clinical practice and emerging evidence. With a focus on improving health care, Nell believes we must first acknowledge the harmful effects of systemic racism and then actively work to create communities and health care systems where people can thrive. Nell currently teaches midwifery skills workshops with a focus on suturing, repair of birth lacerations, and pelvic health in the childbearing year. Nell is the original author and now co-editor of the'Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery & Women’s Health, author of the ACNM text the'Midwife as Surgical First Assistant, and co-author of the Maine CDC'Best Practice Recommendations for Handoff Communication During Transport from a Home or Freestanding Birth Center to a Hospital Setting.

Cindy L. Farley, CNM, PhD, FACNM, studied midwifery at Emory University. She earned her BSN and PhD from The Ohio State University and her MSN from Emory University. She is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University in the Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) programs. She serves as a locum tenens midwife for Mount Eaton Care Center, an Amish birth center in Mount Eaton, Ohio, and Pomerene Hospital, a rural hospital in Millersburg, Ohio. Dr. Farley reviews selected legal cases involving midwifery regulatory issues and clinical care. She is co-editor of Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery and Women’s Health, in an updated sixth edition, and Prenatal and Postnatal Care: A Woman Centered Approach. Dr. Farley has been instrumental in organizing groups of midwifery and WHNP students to visit their federal legislators and advocate for positive change in important maternal health policies and legislation. She received the 2020 American College of Nurse-Midwives Public Policy Award for this work. She was awarded a Faculty Residency in the Fall of 2019 at Oxford University in England, learning from British midwives and midwifery students and exploring their systems of care for childbearing families. She has contributed to global health efforts in Honduras, Guatemala, Haiti, and Liberia. Making midwives and nurse practitioners to improve the health and well-being of all people is Dr. Farley’s passion.'

Robin G. Jordan CNM, PhD, FACNM, studied midwifery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, after earning her MSN from Case Western Reserve University. She earned a PhD in Health Science Research from Touro University. Dr. Jordan started the first hospital-based nurse-midwifery service in the greater Northern Michigan area. During her clinical practice career, she has attended childbearing women in hospital, birth center, and home settings. Dr. Jordan was a long-standing faculty member of Frontier Nursing University developing and teaching the antepartum care course series for midwifery and nurse practitioner students. She has also served as adjunct faculty at Georgetown University teaching antepartum care. She is co-author of Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery and Women’s Health. 'Dr. Jordan currently serves her community as a member of the Board of Directors of the local women’s safe home. She is also chair of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters and is active in state politics with a focus on improving health care for women and girls.
