About the Book

Maureen Coughlin's life has changed in more ways than one. She is starting over in New Orleans as a newly minted member of the police force, but her transition from cocktail waitress to cop hasn't gone as smoothly as she'd hoped. To her commanding officer's amusement, Maureen kicks off her final week of field training by taking a punch to the face as a panicked suspect flees an apartment building, leaving behind several guns and a stash of pot. But out on the street, on the fringes of the action, Maureen sees something transpire that leaves her shaken, and she's sure there's more to this story than meets the eye. As Maureen embarks on a dangerous hunt for answers, Bill Loehfelm guides us around the Crescent City's hidden corners and into its darkest outposts. The result is The Devil in Her Way: a propulsive thriller as electrifying as the city itself.

Review :
"The Devil in Her Way succeeds by placing an intriguing heroine in a fascinating city." --The Washington Post "Punches are flying from page one of this electric thriller." --The Daily Beast "Beautifully written...[New Orleans] has been the setting for a couple of outstanding crime novels, including James Lee Burke's The Tin Roof Blowdown and Sara Gran's quirky Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead. Loehfelm's The Devil in Her Way measures up to that standard and then some." --Bruce DeSilva, Associated Press "Loehfelm's storytelling shines amid the muted action and the nuance: Maureen gets to know the city she's up against, and gets a little further along in getting to know herself." --The New Orleans Times-Picayune "Excellent...Loehfelm meshes graceful prose with edgy suspense." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Crime aficionados will love The Devil in Her Way." --Booklist (starred review) "Bill Loehfelm's razor-sharp The Devil in Her Way is everything you want a crime novel to be: morally twisty, richly textured, and filled with soul. And perhaps its greatest gift is the battered-but-not-broken Maureen Coughlin, a hero with whom we will go anywhere." --Megan Abbott, author of Dare Me "The Devil in Her Way is not only Bill Loehfelm's best book yet--it may just be the best mystery novel to come out of post-Katrina New Orleans since James Lee Burke's The Tin Roof Blowdown. I can offer no higher praise than to say that I finished it and wanted to read more. A gem." --John Connolly, New York Times bestselling author of The Wrath of Angels "Through the eyes of a rookie cop, Bill Loehfelm takes us on a deep, gritty tour of the New Orleans tourists never see. I love The Devil in Her Way and can't wait for Loehfelm's next." --Sara Gran, author of Claire DeWitt and the Bohemian Highway "The Devil in Her Way has it all: rapid-fire pacing, dialogue that crackles, an artful depiction of the streets of New Orleans, and--in Maureen Coughlin--an utterly authentic, memorable protagonist. Bill Loehfelm is a terrific writer." --Alafair Burke, author of Never Tell "Bill Loehfelm, a rising star in crime fiction, just keeps rising higher....Maureen Coughlin is a hero for the ages." --Laura Lippman "The Devil She Knows is nothing short of terrific. An absolutely original voice, and a story that grabs you by the throat and doesn't ever, ever, ever even think of letting go." --John Lescroart, author of Nothing but the Truth, on The Devil She Knows "A rousing tale with riveting characters." --People on The Devil She Knows "The conspiracy in [The Devil She Knows] is on a smaller scale--and is all the more menacing for being so intimate." --The Wall Street Journal on The Devil She Knows "Maureen Coughlin [is] the character of the year." --The New Orleans Times-Picayune on The Devil She Knows
