About the Book

"Noble Smith brings the gory political struggles of fifth-century [B.C.] Greece vividly to life in a way that I haven't seen since the novels of Mary Renault. A superb historical novel by a master storyteller." Angus Donald, author of Warlord, on Spartans at the Gates. Nikias of Plataea has survived battle, shipwreck, and torture. But now the young warrior must face his greatest challenge: leading the people of his city-state on a desperate exodus to Athens while being hunted down by the largest Spartan expeditionary force in history. From the burning forests of the legendary Mount Kithaeron, to the plague-ridden streets of Athens, to the dreaded Prison Pits of Syrakuse, Nikias has to use his fists, sword, and wits to defeat his enemies, and bring aid to a citadel cut off from the rest of the world by merciless invaders. Award-winning author Noble Smith's Sword of Apollo brings to a close the thrilling Warrior trilogy, set during the epic war that tore apart Ancient Greece. "

Review :
Praise for Spartans at the Gates "Smith employs excellent research skills to populate the narrative with entertaining historical factoids about food, sex, dress some of the best centering on Spartan life and ethos not to mention the assorted duplicities and fragile political alliances among the city-states . . . Something different for historical fiction fans." Kirkus Reviews "The fantastic setting is there, the descriptive is there, the research is impeccable, the characters are once again sublime . . . A truly excellent read, crammed with great characters and storytelling, an engaging and fast-paced writing skill and style to rival the best of them." Parmenion Books "The pacing never slackens and the descriptions whether of gruesomely realistic battle scenes or passionate lovemaking put the reader in the moment. Smith clearly knows his history and is able to weave both big themes and minute details into a seamless narrative while at the same time offering large doses of levity that make you care about each character." Historical Novels Review "A high-adrenaline tale of battle and intrigue, honor and treachery, that once under way never lets up its pace . . . Smith's passion for his subject shines through, and the struggles against the odds of his young heroes, Nikias and Kolax, are told with verve and a keen eye for the detail of life in Ancient Greece." James Aitcheson, Author of Sworn Sword Praise for Sons of Zeus "Those interested in ancient Greek history, particular warfare, should be looking forward to the sequels." Historical Novels Review "It takes an author with real talent to engross us in a story. It takes even more talent for an author to convince us we're completely in his world. The guy knows his subject! But forget the meticulous research. Open the first page, sit back with your favorite beverage, and let Smith work his magic. Terrific action with a wickedly brilliant plot, visceral combat, and nail-biting treachery, even the love story . . . In the end you'll be as delighted as we were to discover a skyrocketing new talent in historical fiction and want more." W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear, Authors of People of the Morning Star " Praise for "Spartans at the Gates" "Smith employs excellent research skills to populate the narrative with entertaining historical factoids about food, sex, dress some of the best centering on Spartan life and ethos not to mention the assorted duplicities and fragile political alliances among the city-states . . .
